Understanding crypto profit & loss

Profit and loss (P&L) is the difference between what your position is worth now and what you paid for it. For a long position β€” where you profit when price rises β€” P&L is straightforward: coins held Γ— (exit price βˆ’ entry price). For a short position β€” where you profit when price falls β€” the math flips: coins held Γ— (entry price βˆ’ exit price).

Long P&L = Quantity Γ— (Exit Price βˆ’ Entry Price) βˆ’ Fees

Most free calculators stop there and ignore trading fees, which quietly eat into real returns β€” especially on smaller, frequent trades. This calculator includes buy-side and sell-side fee percentages so the number you see matches what actually lands in your wallet or exchange balance.

Long vs. short positions

A long position is a straightforward buy-and-hold bet that price rises. A short position β€” common on margin and futures platforms β€” profits when price falls, but carries the risk of unlimited loss if price rises instead. Toggle the Long/Short switch above to model either direction.

Why breakeven price matters

Your breakeven price is the exit price at which fees exactly cancel out your gain β€” not simply your entry price. On a long position with fees, breakeven sits slightly above entry; on a short, slightly below. Knowing this number before you trade tells you the minimum move you need just to avoid a loss.

Realized vs. unrealized P&L

If you haven't sold yet, the number shown here is unrealized β€” it reflects your position's paper value at the current market price, which can still change. P&L only becomes realized, and taxable in most jurisdictions, once you actually close the position. For a full year of trades, the Crypto Tax Calculator estimates what you may owe.
