A worked example
At 75°F with 50% relative humidity, the dew point is about 55°F — a comfortable level of atmospheric moisture.
Combined with temperature this drives how the day actually feels, which our heat index calculator works out from the NWS formula.
Frequently asked questions
Why is dew point a better comfort indicator than relative humidity?
Relative humidity tells you what fraction of the air's maximum moisture capacity is being used at the current temperature — that fraction changes as temperature changes. Dew point is an absolute measure that stays the same even if temperature fluctuates, making it a more consistent indicator of how much moisture is actually in the air.
What dew point is considered uncomfortable?
Below about 55°F feels dry and pleasant. Around 60-65°F starts to feel noticeably humid to most people. Above 70°F feels oppressive and can be physically draining, especially with heat.
